It’s Time To Detox & Cleanse

springplumbloosom

I don’t know about you but this morning I could smell the promise of Spring in the air.

And Spring is traditionally the time for renewal, new life, cleansing, and spring cleaning. We can already see signs of new growth, blossom buds, birds in nests, spring lambs and longer days.
Spring traditionally brings the promise of hope, renewal and better days to come and is a perfect time to take stock of your daily habits and mindset and how these directly affect your health, vitality and happiness.

A Toxic Cocktail…
Every day we are exposed to an array of toxins through the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the chemicals we put on our skin. This culmination of toxins places a lot of pressure on our bodies to render them harmless and excrete them from our body.
Diets high in sugar, fatty foods, processed & junk foods, and chemically-laden foods also place a heavy burden on our detoxifying organs.
If we continue to bombard our body with toxins and if we continue to be deficient in the nutrients that help our body rid these toxins, then our detoxification processes will be compromised. This results in toxins being stored in our tissues or being pushed back into our bloodstream causing fatigue, weakened immune function, poor memory, foggy head, lowered mood, sensitivity to foods and damage to our cells.

Feeling the need to Detox & Cleanse?

It’s about this time of year that many of us have a strong urge to do something about the way we are living. We are feeling the effects of our winter lifestyle – too much comfort food, not enough exercise, extra kilos creeping on, feeling run down and becoming lethargic; stodgy and unmotivated.

So if you are…

  • feeling tired, lethargic, unmotivated
  • or suffering from headaches, poor sleep, mood swings and irritability
  • have a constant runny nose, sinusitis, itchy eyes or skin
  • find it difficult to concentrate and stay focused and live with a ‘foggy head’
  • have constant cravings
  • or sensitivities to certain foods
  • battling the winter kilo creep
  • have recurrent infections
  • have muscle aches and weakness

Then it’s time to remove the toxic load from your body.

Where the Amateurs and ill-informed get it wrong

Tried detoxing before? Found it incredibly difficult with harsh symptoms and short-term results?

We see this scenario often.
One of the most common occurrences during cleansing and detox programs, especially ones that focus primarily on treating the liver without first correcting their toxic environment and their gut, is a violent reaction most commonly known as a “Healing Crisis”.

We often hear stories in-store of people who have undergone an advertised “detox” program and complain of symptoms like nausea, pain, headaches, lethargy, aggravation of allergies and increased sensitivity to dietary and environmental chemicals. They last a few days and very quickly revert to old ways, old habits and the cycle continues. They become disillusioned and disempowered about taking control of their health and vitality.

This may have even happened to you. And I’m here to tell you there is no “Healing” in a Healing Crisis!

It is caused by the attempt to stimulate the liver detoxification processes before addressing the digestive system. If the liver is stimulated without the correct the nutrients it can lead to an increase in production of harmful substances that circulate throughout the body. These substances cause damage to cells and tissues and result in unnecessary symptoms associated with “detoxing”. This process is not only damaging, it is counter-productive and unnecessary.

An Expert & Professional Approach

It is vital that the digestive system is repaired and renewed first, before liver function is addressed. Once the digestive system is functioning optimally and the external toxin load has been addressed through lifestyle and environmental changes, then the final stage is to enhance the innate detoxification processes, so that accumulated toxins within the body can be safely broken down and removed.

Over the next couple of weeks I will give you tips and strategies on how to Cleanse and Detox safely and effectively so you will get amazing results.

A couple of Tips to start

For those who are ready to get into it now here’s 3 simple things to get you started:

1. Take the toxic load off your body and Detoxify your environment

· Replace toxic cleaning products with natural ones

· Replace your skin care, hair care, soaps, deodorant, toothpaste, make-up with chemically-friendly alternative

· Spring Clean your home – ridding mould spores and dust

· Pop some plants around your home and office to absorb the off-gassing from your soft furnishings and carpets

· Avoid processed foods that are full of artificial flavourings, colourings, preservatives (so that’s anything with a number or something you can’t pronounce listed in the ingredients)

2. Eat more plant food

· A minimum of 3 cups of vegetables each day

· A minimum of 4 cups of salad each day

· 2/3 pieces of fruit each day

3. Drink pure water

· One of the easiest things you can do to get your body detoxifying better is to drink lots of water. Ideally the water should be as pure as possible and you must drink a minimum of 2 litres per day (more when you are in a heated environment or exercising). A good rule of thumb is that unless your urine is clear, then you need to drink more water (or herbal teas). Water in alcohol, tea, coffee, soft drinks and ice blocks do not count (they actually have a diuretic effect). Avoid coffee (including decaffeinated), and non-herbal teas as they interfere with detoxification.

Next week we’ll look at the right foods to enjoy whilst detoxing and the trigger foods to avoid. We’ll also take a look at the gut and why we need to get that right first before we can get into the liver.
