Obesity is growing

michaelpollan2According to a report released last month by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) the rates of obesity in Australia have increased for both adults and children over the past few decades. Comparisons among other developed countries show that Australia has the second highest rate of obesity for males and the fifth highest for females. Many experts are concerned about the effect rising obesity may have on our rates of diabetes, heart disease and other disorders, perhaps even on our life expectancy. Halting and reversing this trend has now become a national priority.

Couple these figures with a recent report in The Age that only 6% of Australians are eating adequate levels of fruit and vegetables, it becoming quite obvious that our lifestyles, what we eat and how we eat are reflecting our significant weight gain as a nation.

Previously I’ve spoken about the science behind weight loss and observed how multi-factorial shifting stubborn kilos can be. I’ve shared 6 underlying factors to weight gain... today I’ll share with you the final three factors we look at when treating for weight gain.

The Final 3 Drivers that may Impede Weight Loss

7. The Impact of Toxicity

Toxic chemicals like organochlorine pesticides are often elevated in overweight people compared to lean people. This is because these toxins are lipohilic (attracted to fat) and therefore even exposure to low levels over a period of time cause their accumulation in our fat cells. The release of such toxins from storage may then result in adverse effects on our thyroid hormones which then lowers metabolism.
Dysbiosis in the gut, along with toxicity, poor dietary habits (particularly high fad diets) have been shown to reduce numbers of beneficial microflora in the gut resulting in a leaky gut syndrome. This in turn can lead to systemic insulin resistance and elevated trigylcerides and free fatty acids.
Regular cleansing and detoxing is vital for permanent weight loss, health and wellness.

8. Inflammation Impairs Fat Loss

Obesity itself is an inflammatory condition and inflammation is a major driver in obesity and should never be overlooked. Factors which may contribute to inflammation and subsequent weight gain include toxicity, dysbiosis, endocrine abnormalities (eg low thyroid function, high cortisol, low sex hormones etc) and poor dietary habits (including excessive consumption of highly processed carbohydrate foods) Inflammation slows down weight loss significantly

9. pH Balance is essential for Fat Loss

Metabolic acidosis is fast becoming a part of modern day life, mostly due to our typical Western diet. Consequences of tissue acidity include, but are not limited to, reduced thyroid hormone levels, muscle wasting and alterations in insulin activity. Shifting our bodies into a more alkaline state is associated with a higher percentage of lean body mass, which helps maintain metabolic rate and hence helps our ability to burn more calories.
Ensuring you are eating lots of fruits and vegetables and reducing acidic forming foods (white breads, sugars and refined foods) is vital for healthy fat loss.

Whenever we have clients present in our clinics for weight loss we always consider all nine of these underlying drivers that can negatively influence weight management... and you thought it just came down to lack of will power!
