Break the Habit
Wednesday, 16 January 2013 06:30

The great thing about Christmas and New Year in the Southern Hemisphere is that it falls in summer. And summer for a lot of us means holidays, sun, relaxing, and lots of socialising with treasured friends and family. It is a time of freedom from strict routines, of sleeping in, eating all the Christmas chocolate and leftover pudding, lazy days reading and snoozing on the banana lounge and generally taking it easy on ourselves. It is actually very important to do this from time to time – to replenish and rejuvenate; to reflect and dream, and then set new goals for the year ahead.

The problem with Christmas in Summer however, is that the feasting and the alcohol consumption can go on for weeks into the New Year. And it can actually become quite difficult to break this feasting habit. It can be one of our biggest challenges when the feasting becomes an everyday thing and we start to overeat and overindulge.

We had a great quote up in the shop last week:

A lot of people worry about what they eat between Christmas and New Year. When they should actually worry about what they eat between New Year and Christmas”

The thing about feasting foods is that they are very high in fats, sugars and salt, and according to Dr Kessler (Sunday Sun; Body & Soul 10/1/10) this makes them very palatable. He further explains that “palatability” not only involves taste but the motivation to pursue that taste. So these foods actually have a great capacity to stimulate the appetite and prompt us to eat more. And we are all ‘hard-wired’ to focus on the most salient stimuli.

Have you noticed that these foods have the tendency to become addictive? We start to crave them and then justify the cravings as “holiday indulgences”. And the longer we give into these cravings the harder it is to actually give them up and get back to eating “real food”… fruits, vegetables, salads, legumes, fish, lean meats, nuts and seed - these are the foods that provide us with adequate nutrition to feel satiated and don’t stimulate us to eat more and more.

So do yourself a favour today. Make the decision to get rid of all the junk food out of the house and fill the fridge with the beautiful, fresh and wholesome summer fruits, salads and vegetables. Your waistline will appreciate it as will your emotional health.

And some Tips to help you break the feasting habit:

* Regular Exercise – even if it is a walk around the river or a swim in the ocean

* Herbal Teas – to replace coffee and tea are a great way to keep you hydrated, focussed & alert.

*  A good quality multi-strained Probiotic to repair and protect the gut from the onslaught of sugar and fat

* A Liver Tonic to give our hard-working livers a helping hand in detoxifying the alcohol and rich foods we have been overindulging in.
