Magnesium on the Menu
Tuesday, 29 January 2013 09:32

ultramusclezeIn our ‘Back on Track’ program we include magnesium as an essential supplement - and here’s why...

1. Magnesium is needed for our body to produce energy

2. Magnesium is needed for muscle relaxation

3. Our nervous system needs magnesium

4. Our bones need magnesium

5. Our heart needs magnesium

Suffice to say, Magnesium is an essential nutrient.

Early signs of magnesium deficiency can include:

  • Muscle cramps and spasms
  • Muscle tension
  • Stress, nervousness and/or anxiety
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Loss of appetite
  • An irregular heartbeat

The Body's Demand for Magnesium

Magnesium ranks second (only to potassium) as the most abundant cation in the human body. Deficiency of this nutrient is extremely common, manifesting in symptoms such as muscular cramps and pains, insomnia and headaches, as well as fatigue, PMS and a reduced ability to cope with stress.

Absorption of magnesium requires a good dietary intake (legumes, wholegrains, green leafy vegetables, seeds and nuts), together with selenium, vitamin B6, vitamin D and adequate levels of parathyroid hormone.

Absorption is hindered by excessive dietary fat and levels of magnesium are easily depleted through excessive salt intake, alcohol, caffeine, phosphoric acid in soft drinks, medications, excessive sweating and above all, stress.
Many of our customers in store and clients in our clinic show signs of magnesium deficiency

Not all Magnesium supplements are created Equal

Given that so many different factors can influence the absorption of magnesium (from consumption of salt and caffeine, to selenium and B intake) it makes sense to ensure your magnesium supplement is in a form that is well absorbed. Many of the quality brands have researched and produced their magnesium into a specialised mineral delivery system that enhances absorption and intestinal tolerance of magnesium. Talk to the girls in-store to identify which is best for you.

Did You Know?

• Over half the body’s magnesium is found in bone.

• A third of the body’s magnesium is found in muscles and soft tissues.

• Wholegrain cereals are good sources of magnesium but lose a lot of their magnesium content when processed and refined into flour.

• Magnesium makes up part of the structure of chlorophyll, the green pigment in leafy vegetables.

• In plants, chlorophyll (which contains magnesium) converts light into energy. In humans, magnesium is involved in converting food into energy.
• Magnesium is named after the Greek city Magnesia where large deposits of magnesium were found.
